University of Botswana: Faculty of Medicine

The University of Botswana was established in 1982 and was the country’s first institute of higher education.

Faculty of Medicine

Mission: The Faculty of Medicine exists to train medical doctors and biomedical scientists, conduct research and provide services for the health of the people of Botswana.

Vision: To be a distinctive, socially accountable medical training institution in Botswana, Africa and the world.

Core Values: Professionalism; Equity and Diversity; Accountability; Creativity and Innovation; Botho; Quality.

The shortage of local medical officers and specialists in different disciplines necessitated the establishment of a medical school at the University of Botswana in 2009. In 2011-12 MMed training programmes in Internal Medicine, Paediatrics and Adolescent Health, Anaesthesiology, Family Medicine and Public Health, Emergency Medicine, and Pathology were established. In 2020 Mmed General Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics and Psychiatry were established.

The Department of Surgery

The Department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes. The department also hosts Orthopaedics, ENT, and Ophthalmology units. The work towards successfully establishing the UB MMed General Surgery programme started in 2018 and saw the first enrolment of General Surgery residents in 2020. The UB MMed General Surgery programme aims at excellence, not just competence, for our faculty and students. We seek to produce lifelong learners who exemplify evidence-based decision-making. In addition, residents and faculty embody curiosity, personal responsibility, professionalism, and active learning.

Alignment with the vision, mission and values of the university

The UB MMed General Surgery programme, in line with UB’s pursuit of academic excellence for the Faculty of Medicine, aims to produce appropriate general surgical specialists to improve the delivery of surgical care for Batswana and beyond, hence contributing to the improvement of economic and social conditions for the nation. In addition, our goal is to be a regional and international competitive programme in research, education, and training.

The Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine aims to expand access to surgical training and services, provide high-quality service, intensify research performance, strengthen engagement, improve the student experience, and enhance human resources to achieve excellence in healthcare delivery.
