The SUS is actively accepting applications online at http://www.susweb.org/information

They welcome the opportunity to contact anyone put forward to help them with their submission. The deadline for consideration during the upcoming 2017 cycle is August 14, 2016.

Here are the qualification criteria:

Membership into the Society of University Surgeons is given to persons of well established professional position and demonstrated scholarly or creative ability that positively impacts their field. Applicants must be 50 years of age or younger at the time of induction into the Society. Successful applicants are expected to meet at least three of the four criteria in the categories listed below:

  1. Publications: Minimum of 15 peer-reviewed publications, with a minimum of 10 first or senior-authored publications during faculty appointment. A lower minimum number will be considered acceptable, if published in high impact factor journals. Applicant must provide the year of their first faculty position.
  2. Grant Funding: Extramural funding of at least $50,000 per year or total funding at least $100,000 per year, with evidence of research independence.
  3. Education/Administrative (at least 1 of the following):
    a. Departmental (or higher) teaching award
    b. Director of resident/medical student training program
    c. Member of national committee focused on education
    d. Evidence of a major leadership position at an institution or at a national level, such as: division chief or higher administrative position, member of 2 or more national committees, or director of a major, independent functional unit (i.e. SICU)
  4. Evidence of active participation in the Academic Surgical Congress over the past 5 years

Additionally, the SUS is interested in surgical subspecialty representation (i.e. cardiac, thoracic, vascular, pediatrics, urology, head and neck, and plastics).  Please contact me directly by email with any questions.

Applications completed by August 14, 2016 will be reviewed at the October Council meeting to determine candidates that will be placed on the ballot. The ballot will then be voted on at the February 2017 ASC meeting and new members will be inducted at the 2018 meeting.
